Apple’s latest iPhones aren’t officially water-resistant, but they hold up surprisingly well when wet. Watch the iPhone 6s Plus keep up with Samsung’s new Galaxy S7 edge— which is designed to withstand water — in the water resistance test below.
Apple doesn’t market the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus as water-resistant devices, and they aren’t IP-certified like rival smartphones are. However, previous water tests have shown that both handsets are much better at withstanding liquids than their predecessors.
That’s likely because Apple has taken some steps to make them more water-resistant than they were. In an iFixit teardown, it was revealed that there are rubber gaskets around the component connectors on the logic board that prevent water from making contact with the pins.
Perhaps it’s no surprise, then, that the iPhone 6s series doesn’t mind a bit of water. But how much is too much? In the test below, EverythingApplePro on YouTube puts Apple’s latest smartphone up against the Galaxy S7 edge in a series of water tests.
He starts off by dunking both devices for three minutes, and although the iPhone loses service quickly, its display remains on and it continues to function normally after being removed from the water. The handsets are then submerged for ten minutes, and the results are identical.
Things go a little downhill for the iPhone around the 15-minute mark.
The iPhone’s eventual demise is to be expected, but it’s still incredibly impressive that it lasts almost 15 minutes before giving up. We don’t recommend you submerge your iPhone in water, of course, but if you accidentally spill a drink on it, there’s a good chance it will survive.
