Much like Nintendo, Sony has a longstanding relationship with mobile gaming consoles, but with the domination of smartphones and app stores, people have been waiting for both companies to bring their franchises to smartphones and tablets for years.
Nintendo actually broke the ice recently with the launch of Miitomo, the company’s first smartphone game/experience. It wasn’t what a lot of people were expecting, though, and Nintendo had to make a promise that its second mobile game would actually feature a character from Nintendo’s stable of recognizable faces.
Now, Sony is getting in on the fun, too. The company based in Japan has officially announced the formation of “ForwardWorks Corporation,” which is a new entity that’s entirely focused on bringing new mobile games to market, and doing so with PlayStation franchises to draw attention. The new games will be released in Japan and other areas in Asia, and unfortunately the official announcement doesn’t outline when the games might be released in other international markets.
“ForwardWorks will leverage the intellectual property of the numerous PlayStation® dedicated software titles and its gaming characters as well as the knowledge and know-how of gaming development expertise which was acquired over the years with PlayStation® business to provide gaming application optimized for smart devices including smartphones* to users in Japan and Asia. The company will aim to deliver users with opportunity to casually enjoy full-fledged game titles in the new filed of the smart device market.”
The games will be released for both iOS and Android, and the company will begin functioning on April 1.
This actually isn’t the first time that Sony has tried to focus on mobile games. The company had its PlayStation Mobile platform, which was available only for Android many years ago, that saw a variety of different titles get released. However, with ForwardWorks, it looks like Sony is taking the initiative even more seriously this time around.
